November Blog.. Planning for the 2021 Season
First, thank you to all who participated in the October Fundraiser! Together, you raised $5,500.00 for Homes for Our Troops!
#funin21
Yup. That's our motto that will guide us into the new year. We want to of course stay safe and healthy, but also be able to plan things that will keep us moving and shaking. The big team goal is to get to Ironman Mont Tremblant healthy, happy and ready to ROCK the RED, WHITE and BLUE.
So, what do the 2021 BSTT Board of Directors have to say?
Prez Jack Wagon:
I am so pumped to get across the 2020 finish line and hit 2021- It's ON like Donkey Kong. Your 2021 Board is simply amazing, and their energy and thoughtfulness at the November meeting was just something to be humbled by, and I was. Their goals for themselves and the team as a whole are around a few key things:
- Involvement and turn out- in training, fundraising and in races.
- Giving back to the community.
- Every member has enthusiasm to volunteer.
We are growing! In the past year, the team has grown from just under 90 to over 115 members, and we continue to grow. As we see newbies joining, we want to make sure we are supporting them, so we will be designing a Newbie Mentor Program. Every newbie to the sport will be paired with a Mentor:
- There will be a Form to fill in if you would like to be a Mentor.
- Mentors will be paired with any new member who considers themselves a newbie to the sport.
- Mentor will be awarded Volunteer Points.
- Mentee will register for an early season race (Goddard Stomp or Season Opener) and Mentor will be there to "coach".
- Mentor and Mentee will communicate regularly prior to the race to ensure readiness.
- Mentorship will conclude at end of season.
- Friendship (and gratitude) will extend forever!

Keez:
Hi Team, Keezer Here, Its November and this time of the year “It’s all about the Base”… It’s super important to stay consistent with your winter training/cross training and keep your base fitness level up so as we turn the corner from this sucky year and the 2021 race season comes into view, you have a solid foundation to build upon. Stay safe, be positive, and keep logging training miles my friends.
Linda Chiofar:
What’s in it for me? The joys of giving back.
In this time of giving thanks, I am grateful for a ‘successful’ triathlon season during a pandemic. Race season unfolded very differently than any of us planned. Yet there were so many opportunities for growth, for getting better: as members, as triathletes, as people. We learned to adapt, to train for life not just races, to find new ways to challenge ourselves and to give back to our beloved triathlon community. In an effort to sustain our multisport world we competed in fundraisers, challenges and virtual events. And we won, always, by being kind, supportive and giving. Remember this as we enter the off-season of the year that didn’t go as planned, to embrace now the season of giving and of hope. When you pencil in next year’s schedule, let’s not forget to pencil in the ways that you’ll give back to this wonderful community that never fails to keep us strong and healthy!

Amy Carlson: Tough Times don’t last but Tough Teams do! ~ Unknown The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team. ~ Phil Jackson.
Robin Ireland: Hi All, Here in the membership department we are focusing on getting the word out about renewing your membership and all the amazing benefits that come along with that membership. Race discounts, product discounts, coaching discounts, quilt making possibilities, beautiful smelling candle possibilities, give aways, free swag, possible age group champion and of course the chance to win a bike!!!!
We are also working on a mentor program for our members who are new to triathlon, and will hopefully have that firmed up heading into the new year.
Stay safe and renew!
Sue Clavin: Swimming is inside, biking on the trainer has commenced and running, and some hearty souls will be outside all winter, while some will dust off the treadmill. To keep team members from going stir crazy and lonely, there are a few group sessions going on:
Masters swim with Angela Naeth at Raynham Athletic club- new session starts November 30th and runs M/Th 6:15-7:15 pm. Call the RAC 508-823-5440 to sign up.
Zwift sessions hosted by Zachary Samules on Friday mornings at 6:30 have begun, a different ride every week.
Be on the lookout for some fun yet challenging weekly strength training workouts and monthly challenges.
Lastly, if you are swimming, biking, running, or just getting outside and want company or someone to motivate and challenge you, reach out to your fellow Baystate team members by posting on FB. Happy Thanksgiving, team
Shannon Porges: How to use the off season to improve on your weakest sport...
This allows time to dedicate yourself, and laying the groundwork for improving performance.
If you can get to a pool, that's awesome! If not, there are many dryland workouts for swimmers.
The goal with dryland training is pretty simple. It provides a foundation and mobility to improve performance in the water.
We still need to focus on eating right, cross training, assess our training and performance, and most important...focusing on technique.
If you can't get yourself to the gym, no problem. Bodyweight exercises are great!
Here's an example of some to try:
- Burpees or Push-ups (honestly I prefer doing burpees)
- Alt. Jump Lunges, or Jump Squats
- Leg Lifts
- Plank Progression
- Dead-bugs
- Russian Twist
- Rowing machines are also a great replacement for swimming.
Emily Gesner: Hello everyone! As your new webmaster, I want to find out what you like about the BSTT website and what you do not like. The strength of this team is the fact that we are all amazing individuals that come from so many backgrounds and perspectives! Please let me know any and all opinions! Also, please do not "sugar coat" your thoughts to me! As some of you know, I have a thick skin and would love to make the website more user friendly and accessible to everyone! Tons of kudos to the past webmasters, as they have done a marvelous job!
Debi Caprio: The Financial Corner
Hey BSTT peeps, we're on track to have a great 2021! We virtually spent very little money this year. Thank you COVID (not really, you suck). Because we paid for a bunch of stuff this year, many of our activities that are planned for next year are already paid for. With that said, we are in great shape to spice up our race day after parties and hopefully have a lot more activities to plan and train for!
Thank you and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Jackie
